The CREWDSONS

Introduction:

It was kind of fun growing up with a unique name. One that is not shared by anyone you know outside of your family, or anyone that you have ever even heard of. Like other Crewdsons I have since met I often had a look at the telephone book when I was traveling to see if there were any Crewdsons in it. There almost never were. Working at Cambria, a computer programming company, it seemed like a good idea to forget about phone books and put up a Crewdson Web page and invite Crewdsons everywhere to send me links, information, or photos to display on this site. See the links below for some of what I have so far. There is more to come.

Origin of the Crewdson Name

The phone book examiner will know something is up when he checks a phone book in Lancashire! There he might find a whole column of Crewdsons. He will not be mistaken if he concludes that our name has something to do with this part of the world. According to the attached article on the origins of the crewdson name, most (all?) can trace their origins back to the Furness Peninsula in England. Like my family, quite a few of us can trace our ancestry to the market town of Ulverston

Let me hear from you

According to one of the name survey companies there are approx 350 Crewdson households in the world. Of these, 212 are in Britain, largely in Lancashire, 101 are in the USA and an additional 36 are scattered about, mostly in Australia. Questions we need your help on

  • Harry B. Crewdson (Born ?, Died 1956) : Harry was a pioneer flyer who soloed before 1917. The "Early Birds" Web site is trying to find out more about him so they can feature him on their pages. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Alexander Waters Crewdson of Ulverston, Auctioneer. He lived at 9 Edmondson Street. Does anyone have any information on this Crewdson? A family for whom he was an Executor of a will in 1935-1940 would dearly love to track him down.

  • Thomas Crowdson Several lines of Crewdsons have traced their families to a Thomas Crowdson who may have been a Sea Captain, who married Ellen Wignal in 1815 and had four children : James, Jane, John and Mary. There is another Thomas born in Bardsea in 1784. Are these two Thomas's the same? Does anyone have any information about this fellow?

A Note about the pictures at top

 The photo to the left shows the late Jeremy Roger Crewdson of London (1937-1999). According to his old friend Richard Graham who sent this picture to me, he is the big chap on the right. In the center is Captain James Crewdson of Ulverston and on the right is Major Eric Crewdson and his bride, members of the numerous and prosperous Kendal Crewdsons.

A Word about me and about Cambria

 It may cross the mind of a reader of these pages that, for a site by a man from a computer programming and design company, it is not very impressive. In defense of Cambria Corp, I need to say that I am NOT one of the designers. See our link for what a real designer can do when he is paid for it. I am just a fellow who read "HTML for Dummies" so that I could publish this page. I am also not a genealogist. In fact, I have constant trouble in spelling it. I rely on Ernie Crewdson for that. Don't rely heavily on my sketchy charts. They are summary information of far more complete information supplied by Ernie and by others. If the information that seems to be in them is important let me know and I will get you an authoritive copy. If I have a role, it is this: I really enjoy reading the results of those who have researched our families and I enjoy hearing about those families and seeing the pictures. By putting it up on this site it helps us all. In my own case we have already identified 4 different lines of our own family, unsuspected before this site was established, and we have helped others come together as well. It has had practical results. Most of the photos from the 1800s for my own family have come from these formerly unknown branches! In the end all of this probably does not matter a whole lot, and my younger kids could hardly care less, but for me it is a lot of fun.
