Facts and Rumors concerning Crewdsons
- The Captain was probably named after his Uncle Jim, a blacksmith in
Ulverston. Is everyone aware that there is a large group of Crewdson cousins in
the USA that are descended from this distant uncle of ours. They got to the USA
in 1923 and are quite a big group. One of these descendants, cousin Ernie,
is an expert in geneology and is almost entirely responsible for our current state
of knowledge of our Crewdson family history.
- Robert Crewdson, a cousin of Harry's, came to the USA from Courtolds along with
Harry and founded his own branch of the Crewdson family. I don't know much about
these Crewdsons yet but we are working on it.
- The first branch of the American Crewdsons was founded by William Crewdson, who
came to Virginia in 1736/37 as a convict. William was born in London in 1716 to John
Crewdson and Mary Bellows. These Crewdsons are law abiding these
days and we are trying to see if there is some relation to the rest of us.
- A big branch of John Crowdson's descendants, which may have broken off from ours in the 1700s, has
surfaced in Lancashire. They (may) descend from Thomas Crewdson (b Bardsea 1784)
and soon will be the subject of a new page on our Crewdson Web site.
- Captain Crewdson turned down an offer to be Captain of the Titanic.
(This is a persistent story in our family but who knows the source of it?)
- Henry Crewdson Jr. was honored by the
Front Royal, Va Elk's Club in 1994 as "Citizen of the Year".
- More Crewdsons continue to be found. A few days ago (7/99) I heard from a
Crewdson family in Australia and a few weeks before that was contacted by a member of a
Crewdson family in Wisconsin that is probably related to
us through an ancester who lived in the early 1800s. Together with Ernie they are
currently trying to establish this link conclusively.
