Questions concerning the Crewdsons
- Ernie has convinced me that the Captain's wife was a Collinson. It is "Ann Collinson"
on the birth certificate of one of her children. What then is the Harrison connection? Is
her mother a Harrison.
Phyl Gaskell got the answer to this question in her recent trip to England. On Margaret
Crewdsons gravestone is written: "In the hope of a blessed resurrection here rests the body
of Margaret Crewdson daughter of James and Ann Crewdson of this town who fell asleep in
Jesus 23rd January 1880 aged 16 years. ALSO of Agnes Harrison, aunt of the above, who died
3rd Oct 1888 aged 28 years. AND Margaret Harrison, the beloved mother of the above Agnes
Harrison and grandmother of the above Margaret Crewdson, sho died 2nd Apr 1901 aged 83 yrs.
In the midst of life we are in death."
Phyl did some more searching and found that Ruth Ann Collinson was born to Margaret Collinson
and baptised Dec 19 1841 at the Cathedral Manchester (according to the IGI) with no father
listed. Phyl was able to find a marriage for Margaret Collinson to John Harrison Nov 14 1857
in Windemere (also in IGI). It seems likely that Margaret Collinson was an unwed mother before she met Mr. Harrison.

Does anyone know how it was that the Captain went to sea at age 15? He was the son of a tailer, after all.
I asked cousin Ethyl Crewdson Rigg this question (she was in her 90's at the time)
and her response was "I'll have you know that my grandfather was an honest man."
I decided not to pursue this line of questioning. Note 8/01: The Captain's Obituary
(found elsewhere on this site) said the Captain was the sone of a sailer! Could the
writer have mistaken tailer for sailer? Was the Captain's father at one time a sailer?
-
Sue Bond, who was kind enought to give us a copy of the Crew List of the Mary Barrow, said
that a Bond who may have been her relative, actually borded with the Captain at one time.
Does anyone know anything further about this?
